ON THE MOVE

Travelling and moving to other countries is supposed to be on free choice. However, it has become an unfortunate necessity for many people nowadays. Our civilization has faced the issue of migration throughout history development; moreover, the subject of refugees took a special place in this process. Currently, this issue has become much more sensitive.

Nowadays, more than ever, each one of us is a ‘citizen of the world’. Many people choose to study, travel, get acquainted with new traditions of other nations, move to another place and accumulate the cultural experience of other countries. More and more discussions emerged concerning cultural differences, the need for acceptance through involvement, participation and living as a form of empathy, and opportunities to expand one’s range of personality by exploring similarities and differences.

The term ‘different’ has become a topic interest of conversation in every society, where, of course, opinions on this phenomenon are still divided. Undoubtedly, this is because culture is always the most vital identifier for both individuals and nations. This issue often creates a certain amount of public confusion and possibly a fear of something new, which is perceived as a threat to old foundations and generational traditions entrenched in the subconscious.

Dr. Siqi Chen has devoted several studies to the issue of refugee children. How do people adapt to life in an unfamiliar country, how does it affect the human psyche, and what kind of outside support is needed? These issues will be discussed during the exhibition.

This exhibition is an investigation of society taken from 3 generations’ perspectives. The authors’ representations claim that now we all need to visualize stories about people’s lives outside their homeland, stories of hope, mutual understanding, love for people, regardless of nationality. This project is about the courage to go further, about the desire to be on the move because the world is full of opportunities. We all need friendly advice and enthusiastic participation. Today, the experience of those who have chosen to live outside their homeland is becoming supportive for those who have left their land.

Giorgia Zhang/ Chang Zhang (2005) is talented in painting and filmmaking; she studies in a local school in Riga. Giorgia shares about living in a foreign country:” Many difficulties are dealt with, and I think sometimes I have to learn how to live with them. Living in a foreign country is a valuable experience. Throughout the years, I have learnt to stand up against things that I am not comfortable with.” Chang’s room illustrates her generation’s insight into the daily lives of the vulnerable population.

Dr. Siqi Chen (1990) is a researcher and architect who lives in Berlin. Siqi’s installations, videos and photos are rooted in extensive research about fugitive children in this exhibition. All recurring themes are the lives of fugitive children in host countries, their psychological consequences, the legacy of social conflicts, and its lasting effects on global capitalism. As a social researcher who works with humans in daily life, one of her tasks is to make things clear and understandable for everyone outside her work. So she often interlinks facts and individuals to reflect a diversity of social experiences for the minority groups.

Mary Zhang /Hongge Zhang (1967) was born in Beijing, China. However, she has chosen Riga for settling over the past few years. Mary is a Registered Urban Planner in the People’s Republic of China. Before coming to Latvia, she mainly worked in architecture and urban design for about 25 years. She also owns 20 years of experience in the traditional Chinese art field, working on representing traditional Chinese history, calligraphy, and antique patterns in combinations with new artistic techniques. Mary Zhang’s call is to understand the diversity between Eastern and Western cultures, help locals develop a good relationship with the Chinese people, and overcome the gap between the two nations. She thinks you have to be brave to live in a foreign country. She urges her not to be afraid of cultural differences and live up to her dreams, respecting and accepting the values of the country in which one is located, either because of one’s tendencies or circumstances.

Joint exhibition of artists and their pupils “Teacher – Student”.

18.02.2022. – 30.04.2022.

Visual arts - a surprising phenomenon that has been present in the formation and development of human civilizations, which we are familiar with alongside concepts such as the state and property, animal husbandry and agriculture. Art became an important testimony, a form of expression and an integral part of society in the earliest stages of development: the tradition of transferring creative skills from one person to another was born and strengthened, mentors, teachers and students, masters and apprentices emerged. In the course of the development of civilization, schools emerged as a separate resource for growth. For example, in his spare time, Plato gathered the audience and passed on his experience and knowledge, while in ancient Egypt, children were taught to draw in schools.

The Renaissance era brought real prosperity. Visual art grew from a simple reflection of the world around it and an attribute of religion to a science equivalent to mathematics and physics. It is at this time that the disciples start living, working and learning painting in their workshops with great masters.

One of the most famous examples of a genius teacher and no less a genius student in the quatricento stage is Filippo Lippi and his student Sandro Botticelli. In 1464, Botticelli began studying with Lippi and won love and respect with his talent, later reaching an absolutely new level of artistic mastery. Another example of a teacher-student tandem is from the Baroque era - Peter Paul Rubens and Antoine van Deik. The student achieved such a high virtuosity of mastery that Rubens was sometimes unable to distinguish his work from that of a new protege. Thanks to their work and treatises on art, the masters of the Enlightenment laid the foundations for the establishment of professional educational institutions. The first art academies in Western Europe opened in the second half of the 16th century. Students received highly qualified and versatile education and graduated as experienced painters. Art academies evolved and improved, generations of artists changed, but the tradition of passing on artistic skills remained unchanged and reached out to contemporary artists who, like their predecessors, learned from the talented masters of their time.

In today's world, the tradition of teaching painting has survived not only within the walls of professional educational institutions, but also as a transfer of a teacher's personal experience to a student in the artist's workshop. This phenomenon is by no means rare and, in our opinion, has survived precisely because of the creative potential of people who strive to take over the skills and experience of their favorite artists, whose work is in line with their own personal understanding of painting.

The exhibition “Teacher - Student” in the gallery MuseumLV is dedicated to the creative relationship between the master and his students and is made up of works by several professional groups of Latvian artists. Artists such as Ilze Laizāne, Dmitrijs Lavrentjevs, Zane Balode, Nikolajs Krivošeins, Nukzars Paksadze, Tālivaldis Muzikants, Ieva Muzikante, Emīls Kristiāns Muzikants, Olga Šilova, Nele Zirnīte, Vadims Markevičs, Katrīna Taivāne, Roberts Diners, Lilija Dinere, Andris Loss and their talented followers.

Curator of the exhibition “Teacher - Student”: culturologist Darya Samarina.

Elga Grinvalde. Solo exhibition "Verticals".

Elga Grinvalde | Dedication to Handel | 2020 | oil on canvas | 100 x 125 cm

22.12.2021. – 5.02.2022.

The sacred days of the year are approaching, when we want to maintain inner peace and light for the whole next year. Now more than ever we need this connection with one another and faith. Our search for happiness is very individual - for some it is a quiet moment in church, but for others it is a meditative state through immersion in colors, forms and light.

In the works of Elga Grinvalde, presented at the personal exhibition "Verticals" at the gallery MuseumLV, there are direct references to the Roman basilica, in which beauty of the Divine leads to a quiet, unchanging harmony. The artist’s painting is characterized by interaction of light and color, which creates special vibrations and draws the viewer into a meditative state. With its wide dimensions, simplified shapes and masterful nuances, the potential of color is unleashed, while the shimmering layers of paint bring a sense of depth. A similar meditative aura manifests itself in the cold beauty of winter.

Artist Elga Grinvalde explains the idea of the exhibition: ’Look from point to point, higher and higher until the boundary disappears. Verticals, cathedrals, mountains and sky, giant forests, trees, church, skyscrapers, stars and distance unknown. Barcode, blanket patterns, national skirts, lines and patterns, coatings with endless thoughts. Verticals - climbing a mountain, persistent work, falling and resurrection, delving into the essence of things, new revelations, walking into the depths of infinite vertical. We look for our own vertical. The exhibition is based on a game of color and light interaction independently from an artist. On a basis of gold. Gold as a background since the Byzantine Middle Ages. The play of divine beauty in the basilica with sun and candle lights and the sounds of vibrating coral transfers people's subconscious to the vertical lines. Looking at the paintings in the exhibition, each visitor will see their vision. Person is what he sees, hears, feels. Paintings with an approximate mood can bring each person individually into the harmony of silence that is their own vertical.’

Elga Grinvalde (1966), born in Valka. Since 1996, she has regularly organized solo exhibitions both in Latvia and abroad. She had participated in exhibitions at the Mark Rothko Art Center, the Arsenals Exhibition Hall ‘Arsenals’, the Gallery MuseumLV, the Baltic Biennale in St. Petersburg, L'Eternita nell Arte in Rome, and elsewhere.

The team of Gallery MuseumLV wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe, happy New Year 2022.

Music of the exhibition: Toms Auniņš.

Christmas exhibition - sale

Anna Kustikova | Christmas pudding | aquarelle | 2021 | 40,5 х 22 см

22.12.2021. – 29.01.2022

It's Christmas time. This year, we especially want to protect the light, the warmth of the heart and share it with others, so that together we can maintain spiritual strength and joy of life. Already last year, the gallery MuseumLV enriched the range of festive events with the exhibition sale “100 works - 100 authors”, which delighted many visitors and allowed artists to share their visual stories. That is why this year we want to help everyone interested to meet different artists by enjoying their works of art and maybe buy a unique gift for himself or some close person.

We intend our Christmas exhibition as a snowstorm of colors, which you can indulge and capture the feelings of different seasons through paintings, travel the world of fantasy and see the beauty of the most ordinary everyday things through the eyes of the artist.

People able to find the joy of holidays through hearing, seeing, feeling something reminiscent of the feast of childhood - as they were expected and finally brought many moments of happiness. The joy of the holiday comes with remembering experiences with dear people. The joy of the holiday is also a new impressions we get when we let the whirlwind of the holiday season go, when we go to look for ideas on how to surprise our loved ones or enjoy the beauty that surrounds us just like glittering holiday decorations. We hope that one of the shining sources of joy will be the Christmas exhibition of the gallery MuseumLV.

Eduard Zentsik, Yury Khorev, Tauno Kangro. Exhibition "MŪZA/MUSE/МУЗА"

02.10. - 11.12.2021

Estonian artists will reveal the secrets of their muses - Tauno Kangro, Yury Khorev and Eduard Zentsik invite to the joint exhibition at the Art Gallery MuseumLV, Andreja Pumpura iela 2, LV – 1010, Riga

From October 2 there will be exhibition MŪZA/MUSE/МУЗА — a unique cooperation of three famous Estonian artists Zentsik, Khorev and Kangro.

The MuseumLV Gallery is an ideal place for the confessions of artists, in whose works great attention is paid to the sources of their inspiration. The joint art project is already familiar to fans in Estonia, but it will be seen for the first time in Latvia. As always, it will be updated, and the audience will see the most recent art works.

The exhibition MŪZA/MUSE/МУЗА will provide contemporary art lovers with a wide range of artistic pursuits. Eduard Zentsik, who is familiar with his ease of existence in different styles and art directions, will offer to plunge into a series of magical portraits. Zentsik does not hide the habitat of his muses - the magical land of Fairies and the dark nooks of mythical worlds. The works of different series evoke memories of classical modernity and the period of Pre-Raphaelites. Yury Khorev, in turn, will tell the audience about the impressions and emotions of communicating with his muses. Airy forms, pure colors, sometimes the schematic nature of a large author's gesture allows you to feel the full strength of the character of the heroines. The women of Khorev are not reduced to their physicality and beauty of lines - each of them has a personality, history and judgment about the world. The living legend Tauno Kangro, developing the theme of lightness and heavenly origin of muses, will add volume with his works. The skill of the sculptor, giving flexibility and weightlessness to metal, for all its physical weight, can be compared with divine inspiration. The muses caught in the artwork of Kangro seem to be frozen for the audience, so that they can see the most graceful details that give them inspiration.

At the same time, the current feminist agenda of our time can reproach the authors of the exhibition with its indignation at such attention to the female body. However, it is worth looking at the presented works, as any accusations will become untenable. In the works of artists there is no place for objectification of female physiology and predatory voluptuousness.

MŪZA/MUSE/МУЗА — it is an ode to admiration for their muses and recognition of their complicity in the art process.
MŪZA/MUSE/МУЗА — it is a trio of dissimilar, but balanced art soloists, whose "ensemble" was able to achieve absolute harmony.

The project of a unique cooperation of the sculptor Tauno Kangro and painters Yuri Khorev and Eduard Zentsik MŪZA/MUSE/МУЗА will be available to the viewer until December 11.

Art critic: Mikhail Komashko

Eduard Zentsik (born 1975) is a contemporary Estonian genre-busting artist. The main E.Zentsik’s art object is “playing the artist”. The fancied artist deconstructs the philistine notion of commitment to style: the selection of forms varies from the traditional pictorial art to the actionism. The Artist “zentsikizes” each style and trend. Eduard Zentsik presents to the viewer his own version of oscillation in the post-modernism era. With ease, he juggles with methods, habituates trends and adopts styles. Destruction, mixing and aligning of each guise – all this makes the Artist trans-universal.
The brand of “Unknown Artist Zentsik” is well known in his native region of the North-Eastern Estonia. The participant of a whole number of presentations, the facilitator of young artist exhibitions, populariser of the contemporary art process, a guest at any important event, a photographer, sculptor, an installation artist— all these make the Artist an easily recognizable figure in the local environment. Painter, photographer, graphic artist, designer, author of installations, performances and musical improvisations. Organizer of youth exhibitions and projects. For over years of creativity had more than a hundred personal exhibitions and took part in numerous joint projects. Participant and winner of international Photographic and Art competitions. Numerous works are in private collections around the world. Member of the Estonian Association of Artists.
 E.Zentsik

Yury Khorev (born 1956) is one of successfully working contemporary artists in Estonia, who has found his own place in the world of art in recent years. He has been residing in Estonia since 1957. Kohtla-Jarve School of Art and Moscow University of Arts (1985) have formed aesthetic views of Yury Khorev.
His works have been shown on annual exhibitions in Johvi branch of Estonian State Museum of Creative Arts since 1987 as well in group exhibitions in Norderhtadt (Germany), Moscow (Russia), Staffentorp (Sweden), Minsk (Belarus), New York (USA). Since 2014 - member of the board of the Association of Russian Artists of Estonia. In 2005 and 2019 Ida Virumaa Culture Prize Laureate. Many paintings are kept in private collections in Estonia, Finland, Germany, Italy, France, Russia, the USA.
 Y.Khorev

Tauno Kangro (born 1966) started his art studies in Kalju Reitel’s Sculpture Studio, has graduated Estonian Academy of Arts, sculpture department (1993) and is a member of the Estonian Artists’ Association since 1994. His creation may be found in many collections in Estonia, Germany, Austria, France, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, USA, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Russia, etc. Tauno’s works have been exhibited in more than 70 individual exhibitions all over the world, additionally in many joint exhibitions.
To the question „What motivates you?“ replies Tauno Kangro „I am motivated if I can create something that has bigger value than my current presence in this world.”

Diskusija “Mitoloģijas metamorfozes šodien un rīt”

17.09.2021. - 16:00 - 18:00

Tad teksts vairākus gadsimtus bija it kā aizmirsts.
