ON THE MOVE
Travelling and moving to other countries is supposed to be on free choice. However, it has become an unfortunate necessity for many people nowadays. Our civilization has faced the issue of migration throughout history development; moreover, the subject of refugees took a special place in this process. Currently, this issue has become much more sensitive.
Nowadays, more than ever, each one of us is a ‘citizen of the world’. Many people choose to study, travel, get acquainted with new traditions of other nations, move to another place and accumulate the cultural experience of other countries. More and more discussions emerged concerning cultural differences, the need for acceptance through involvement, participation and living as a form of empathy, and opportunities to expand one’s range of personality by exploring similarities and differences.
The term ‘different’ has become a topic interest of conversation in every society, where, of course, opinions on this phenomenon are still divided. Undoubtedly, this is because culture is always the most vital identifier for both individuals and nations. This issue often creates a certain amount of public confusion and possibly a fear of something new, which is perceived as a threat to old foundations and generational traditions entrenched in the subconscious.
Dr. Siqi Chen has devoted several studies to the issue of refugee children. How do people adapt to life in an unfamiliar country, how does it affect the human psyche, and what kind of outside support is needed? These issues will be discussed during the exhibition.
This exhibition is an investigation of society taken from 3 generations’ perspectives. The authors’ representations claim that now we all need to visualize stories about people’s lives outside their homeland, stories of hope, mutual understanding, love for people, regardless of nationality. This project is about the courage to go further, about the desire to be on the move because the world is full of opportunities. We all need friendly advice and enthusiastic participation. Today, the experience of those who have chosen to live outside their homeland is becoming supportive for those who have left their land.
Giorgia Zhang/ Chang Zhang (2005) is talented in painting and filmmaking; she studies in a local school in Riga. Giorgia shares about living in a foreign country:” Many difficulties are dealt with, and I think sometimes I have to learn how to live with them. Living in a foreign country is a valuable experience. Throughout the years, I have learnt to stand up against things that I am not comfortable with.” Chang’s room illustrates her generation’s insight into the daily lives of the vulnerable population.
Dr. Siqi Chen (1990) is a researcher and architect who lives in Berlin. Siqi’s installations, videos and photos are rooted in extensive research about fugitive children in this exhibition. All recurring themes are the lives of fugitive children in host countries, their psychological consequences, the legacy of social conflicts, and its lasting effects on global capitalism. As a social researcher who works with humans in daily life, one of her tasks is to make things clear and understandable for everyone outside her work. So she often interlinks facts and individuals to reflect a diversity of social experiences for the minority groups.
Mary Zhang /Hongge Zhang (1967) was born in Beijing, China. However, she has chosen Riga for settling over the past few years. Mary is a Registered Urban Planner in the People’s Republic of China. Before coming to Latvia, she mainly worked in architecture and urban design for about 25 years. She also owns 20 years of experience in the traditional Chinese art field, working on representing traditional Chinese history, calligraphy, and antique patterns in combinations with new artistic techniques. Mary Zhang’s call is to understand the diversity between Eastern and Western cultures, help locals develop a good relationship with the Chinese people, and overcome the gap between the two nations. She thinks you have to be brave to live in a foreign country. She urges her not to be afraid of cultural differences and live up to her dreams, respecting and accepting the values of the country in which one is located, either because of one’s tendencies or circumstances.
Guest Maria (Yu Qian) will present a lecture about the traditional Chinese tea rituals.

Visual arts - a surprising phenomenon that has been present in the formation and development of human civilizations, which we are familiar with alongside concepts such as the state and property, animal husbandry and agriculture. Art became an important testimony, a form of expression and an integral part of society in the earliest stages of development: the tradition of transferring creative skills from one person to another was born and strengthened, mentors, teachers and students, masters and apprentices emerged. In the course of the development of civilization, schools emerged as a separate resource for growth. For example, in his spare time, Plato gathered the audience and passed on his experience and knowledge, while in ancient Egypt, children were taught to draw in schools.
The Renaissance era brought real prosperity. Visual art grew from a simple reflection of the world around it and an attribute of religion to a science equivalent to mathematics and physics. It is at this time that the disciples start living, working and learning painting in their workshops with great masters.
One of the most famous examples of a genius teacher and no less a genius student in the quatricento stage is Filippo Lippi and his student Sandro Botticelli. In 1464, Botticelli began studying with Lippi and won love and respect with his talent, later reaching an absolutely new level of artistic mastery. Another example of a teacher-student tandem is from the Baroque era - Peter Paul Rubens and Antoine van Deik. The student achieved such a high virtuosity of mastery that Rubens was sometimes unable to distinguish his work from that of a new protege. Thanks to their work and treatises on art, the masters of the Enlightenment laid the foundations for the establishment of professional educational institutions. The first art academies in Western Europe opened in the second half of the 16th century. Students received highly qualified and versatile education and graduated as experienced painters. Art academies evolved and improved, generations of artists changed, but the tradition of passing on artistic skills remained unchanged and reached out to contemporary artists who, like their predecessors, learned from the talented masters of their time.
In today's world, the tradition of teaching painting has survived not only within the walls of professional educational institutions, but also as a transfer of a teacher's personal experience to a student in the artist's workshop. This phenomenon is by no means rare and, in our opinion, has survived precisely because of the creative potential of people who strive to take over the skills and experience of their favorite artists, whose work is in line with their own personal understanding of painting.
The exhibition “Teacher - Student” in the gallery MuseumLV is dedicated to the creative relationship between the master and his students and is made up of works by several professional groups of Latvian artists. Artists such as Ilze Laizāne, Dmitrijs Lavrentjevs, Zane Balode, Nikolajs Krivošeins, Nukzars Paksadze, Tālivaldis Muzikants, Ieva Muzikante, Emīls Kristiāns Muzikants, Olga Šilova, Nele Zirnīte, Vadims Markevičs, Katrīna Taivāne, Roberts Diners, Lilija Dinere, Andris Loss and their talented followers.
Curator of the exhibition “Teacher - Student”: culturologist Darya Samarina.

Christmas exhibition - sale
22.12.2021. – 29.01.2022
It's Christmas time. This year, we especially want to protect the light, the warmth of the heart and share it with others, so that together we can maintain spiritual strength and joy of life. Already last year, the gallery MuseumLV enriched the range of festive events with the exhibition sale “100 works - 100 authors”, which delighted many visitors and allowed artists to share their visual stories. That is why this year we want to help everyone interested to meet different artists by enjoying their works of art and maybe buy a unique gift for himself or some close person.
We intend our Christmas exhibition as a snowstorm of colors, which you can indulge and capture the feelings of different seasons through paintings, travel the world of fantasy and see the beauty of the most ordinary everyday things through the eyes of the artist.
People able to find the joy of holidays through hearing, seeing, feeling something reminiscent of the feast of childhood - as they were expected and finally brought many moments of happiness. The joy of the holiday comes with remembering experiences with dear people. The joy of the holiday is also a new impressions we get when we let the whirlwind of the holiday season go, when we go to look for ideas on how to surprise our loved ones or enjoy the beauty that surrounds us just like glittering holiday decorations. We hope that one of the shining sources of joy will be the Christmas exhibition of the gallery MuseumLV.

Elga Grinvalde. Solo exhibition "Verticals".
22.12.2021. – 5.02.2022.
The sacred days of the year are approaching, when we want to maintain inner peace and light for the whole next year. Now more than ever we need this connection with one another and faith. Our search for happiness is very individual - for some it is a quiet moment in church, but for others it is a meditative state through immersion in colors, forms and light.
In the works of Elga Grinvalde, presented at the personal exhibition "Verticals" at the gallery MuseumLV, there are direct references to the Roman basilica, in which beauty of the Divine leads to a quiet, unchanging harmony. The artist’s painting is characterized by interaction of light and color, which creates special vibrations and draws the viewer into a meditative state. With its wide dimensions, simplified shapes and masterful nuances, the potential of color is unleashed, while the shimmering layers of paint bring a sense of depth. A similar meditative aura manifests itself in the cold beauty of winter.
Artist Elga Grinvalde explains the idea of the exhibition: ’Look from point to point, higher and higher until the boundary disappears. Verticals, cathedrals, mountains and sky, giant forests, trees, church, skyscrapers, stars and distance unknown. Barcode, blanket patterns, national skirts, lines and patterns, coatings with endless thoughts. Verticals - climbing a mountain, persistent work, falling and resurrection, delving into the essence of things, new revelations, walking into the depths of infinite vertical. We look for our own vertical. The exhibition is based on a game of color and light interaction independently from an artist. On a basis of gold. Gold as a background since the Byzantine Middle Ages. The play of divine beauty in the basilica with sun and candle lights and the sounds of vibrating coral transfers people's subconscious to the vertical lines. Looking at the paintings in the exhibition, each visitor will see their vision. Person is what he sees, hears, feels. Paintings with an approximate mood can bring each person individually into the harmony of silence that is their own vertical.’
Elga Grinvalde (1966), born in Valka. Since 1996, she has regularly organized solo exhibitions both in Latvia and abroad. She had participated in exhibitions at the Mark Rothko Art Center, the Arsenals Exhibition Hall ‘Arsenals’, the Gallery MuseumLV, the Baltic Biennale in St. Petersburg, L'Eternita nell Arte in Rome, and elsewhere.
The team of Gallery MuseumLV wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe, happy New Year 2022.
Music of the exhibition: Toms Auniņš.

Eduard Zentsik, Yury Khorev, Tauno Kangro. Exhibition "MŪZA/MUSE/МУЗА"
02.10. - 11.12.2021
Estonian artists will reveal the secrets of their muses - Tauno Kangro, Yury Khorev and Eduard Zentsik invite to the joint exhibition at the Art Gallery MuseumLV, Andreja Pumpura iela 2, LV – 1010, Riga
From October 2 there will be exhibition MŪZA/MUSE/МУЗА — a unique cooperation of three famous Estonian artists Zentsik, Khorev and Kangro.
The MuseumLV Gallery is an ideal place for the confessions of artists, in whose works great attention is paid to the sources of their inspiration. The joint art project is already familiar to fans in Estonia, but it will be seen for the first time in Latvia. As always, it will be updated, and the audience will see the most recent art works.
The exhibition MŪZA/MUSE/МУЗА will provide contemporary art lovers with a wide range of artistic pursuits. Eduard Zentsik, who is familiar with his ease of existence in different styles and art directions, will offer to plunge into a series of magical portraits. Zentsik does not hide the habitat of his muses - the magical land of Fairies and the dark nooks of mythical worlds. The works of different series evoke memories of classical modernity and the period of Pre-Raphaelites. Yury Khorev, in turn, will tell the audience about the impressions and emotions of communicating with his muses. Airy forms, pure colors, sometimes the schematic nature of a large author's gesture allows you to feel the full strength of the character of the heroines. The women of Khorev are not reduced to their physicality and beauty of lines - each of them has a personality, history and judgment about the world. The living legend Tauno Kangro, developing the theme of lightness and heavenly origin of muses, will add volume with his works. The skill of the sculptor, giving flexibility and weightlessness to metal, for all its physical weight, can be compared with divine inspiration. The muses caught in the artwork of Kangro seem to be frozen for the audience, so that they can see the most graceful details that give them inspiration.
At the same time, the current feminist agenda of our time can reproach the authors of the exhibition with its indignation at such attention to the female body. However, it is worth looking at the presented works, as any accusations will become untenable. In the works of artists there is no place for objectification of female physiology and predatory voluptuousness.
MŪZA/MUSE/МУЗА — it is an ode to admiration for their muses and recognition of their complicity in the art process.
MŪZA/MUSE/МУЗА — it is a trio of dissimilar, but balanced art soloists, whose "ensemble" was able to achieve absolute harmony.
The project of a unique cooperation of the sculptor Tauno Kangro and painters Yuri Khorev and Eduard Zentsik MŪZA/MUSE/МУЗА will be available to the viewer until December 11.
Art critic: Mikhail Komashko
Eduard Zentsik (born 1975) is a contemporary Estonian genre-busting artist. The main E.Zentsik’s art object is “playing the artist”. The fancied artist deconstructs the philistine notion of commitment to style: the selection of forms varies from the traditional pictorial art to the actionism. The Artist “zentsikizes” each style and trend. Eduard Zentsik presents to the viewer his own version of oscillation in the post-modernism era. With ease, he juggles with methods, habituates trends and adopts styles. Destruction, mixing and aligning of each guise – all this makes the Artist trans-universal.
The brand of “Unknown Artist Zentsik” is well known in his native region of the North-Eastern Estonia. The participant of a whole number of presentations, the facilitator of young artist exhibitions, populariser of the contemporary art process, a guest at any important event, a photographer, sculptor, an installation artist— all these make the Artist an easily recognizable figure in the local environment. Painter, photographer, graphic artist, designer, author of installations, performances and musical improvisations. Organizer of youth exhibitions and projects. For over years of creativity had more than a hundred personal exhibitions and took part in numerous joint projects. Participant and winner of international Photographic and Art competitions. Numerous works are in private collections around the world. Member of the Estonian Association of Artists.
Yury Khorev (born 1956) is one of successfully working contemporary artists in Estonia, who has found his own place in the world of art in recent years. He has been residing in Estonia since 1957. Kohtla-Jarve School of Art and Moscow University of Arts (1985) have formed aesthetic views of Yury Khorev.
His works have been shown on annual exhibitions in Johvi branch of Estonian State Museum of Creative Arts since 1987 as well in group exhibitions in Norderhtadt (Germany), Moscow (Russia), Staffentorp (Sweden), Minsk (Belarus), New York (USA). Since 2014 - member of the board of the Association of Russian Artists of Estonia. In 2005 and 2019 Ida Virumaa Culture Prize Laureate. Many paintings are kept in private collections in Estonia, Finland, Germany, Italy, France, Russia, the USA.
Tauno Kangro (born 1966) started his art studies in Kalju Reitel’s Sculpture Studio, has graduated Estonian Academy of Arts, sculpture department (1993) and is a member of the Estonian Artists’ Association since 1994. His creation may be found in many collections in Estonia, Germany, Austria, France, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, USA, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Russia, etc. Tauno’s works have been exhibited in more than 70 individual exhibitions all over the world, additionally in many joint exhibitions.
To the question „What motivates you?“ replies Tauno Kangro „I am motivated if I can create something that has bigger value than my current presence in this world.”

Rita Pranca. Solo exhibition "Quattour Viris".
13.08.2021. – 23.09.2021.
Rita Pranča personal exhibition of paintings and objects is dedicated to fantastic (from the point of view of a female painter) creatures - to men. 4 rooms of the gallery MuseumLV will be given to 4 heroes - men who has played different roles in the artist’s life. These 4 special worlds are combined into one integral emotional narrative, sometimes detached, sometimes quite intimate.
These men have been important figures in the life of Rita Pranca for 50 years: father - mechanical engineer Robert-Eugene Prancs, childhood friend - poet Alexander Zapol, husband - artist Andrey Bovtovics and an iconic person through her lifetime - Raymond Pauls. Each of these characters epresents their own professional world - the world of mechanics, the world of poetry, the world of painting and the world of music.
Layering of meanings and comparison of the spheres of perception of the world of men creates a history of the formation of the author's creative path.
This exhibition is an attempt to find the path and to define identification in the mirror of the male world. The artist has more than once turned in her work to the study of the borderline between the male and female ways of perceiving reality and the way a creative person exists in the dual world. A series of paintings and drawings by Rita Pranca is dedicated to the male nude model, as opposed to the traditional way of portraying the female nude model as both male artists and female artists.
Rita Pranca was born in Riga. She has taken part in group exhibitions in Latvia and abroad since 1992. In 1994 she presented her works at her first solo exhibition at the House of Journalists and since then has regularly organized her personal exhibitions. Recently, she found a new hobby for herself - ceramics and continues her studies in this field at the master's degree at the Latvian Academy of Arts.

Arthur Berzinsh. Solo exhibition "A New Day Will Arise For Latvia"
02.07.2021 - 23.09.2021
Multimedia artist Arthur Berzinsh is pleased to present his solo show A New Day Will Arise For Latvia as the next in a row of Transpositions cycle at MuseumLV art gallery.
The word "transposition" has a lot of meanings and explanations. It is used in biology, music, philosophy, linguistics, law, telecommunications and many other realms of social life. The medical meaning of the term is deeply personally for the author - back in childhood, he underwent a unique heart operation, where the transposition of blood vessels has become one of the central development. In order to further study various aspects of both individual and collective, and especially national identity in the conditions of accelerated transformation of modern reality, the artist uses the term of transposition as the main key for his concept. Therefore, a video game, a set of staged figurative compositions, realised as a large format photography, objects and assemblages has been created by Arthur in his beloved provocative kitsch manner for the show. Thus the capacity of this term allowed him to produce bold moves of well-known and widespread ideas, situations and elements. According to his vision, Arthur has created peculiar visual quirks corresponding to nowadays situation, combining heroes of ancient Greek myths, important Latvian historical personalities, modern Western popular cult figures and even information about the most current achievements in conquering the Universe with Latvian ornaments and self-created computer game elements. The artist believes that the boundaries of our reality are constantly changing with increasing intensity. Isn't it significant that the atypical combination of well-known ideas and concepts created by Arthur Berzinsh no longer seems so strange? Perhaps we can say that such a new semiotic rag of ideas, ornaments and elements, however, aptly captures some significant tendencies as in the words of K. Jung, "in the unconscious of society" and how the formation of the concept of individual and national identity takes place in it? The artist invites the viewer to make his own interpretation or transposition of this term with the assistance of a virtual game created especially for this exhibition,as he is convinced that in many cases game plays a very important role in both life and art.
“According to the epos about Lacplesis, who represents the manifestation of the heroic power of Latvia, the foreign invader takes away the source of strength - the ear. In my interpretation, the severed ear as a lost part of a whole, to some extent symbolizes the insurmountable trauma of the Latvian people. The exhibition was based on the idea to show the problem of the modern Western world, which is trying to turn against the concept of the individual as an indivisible, integral subject, replacing him with a dividual, a subject-constructor who can easily understand its components - or, recalling the events of the poem, this is an extra ear thrown into opening. To create my works, I used the method of transposition. ", - Arthur says.
About the artist. The artist was born on April 20, 1983 in Riga. He earned a MA degree in the Visual Communication at Department of the Latvian Academy of Arts. Artūrs Bērziņš has six solo exhibitions, including the exhibition “Barotava” (2017) at the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Center in his art history. The artist's previous solo exhibition “Great Loneliness” was held at the MuseumLV Art Gallery in 2018. Artist has participated in more than 50 group exhibitions and projects in Latvia and abroad. Simultaneously he carries out activities in a genre of performance. During 2017, 2018 and 2019, three performances of the artist took place at MuseumLV art gallery. In addition, Artūrs Bērziņš has created scenography for several plays directed by Dž.Dž. Džilindžer plays at Great Hall of the Daile Theater (2018-2019), as well as many videos, animations and short films, including videos for world music stars such as "Seven Lions" and "Cradle Of Filth". In 2010, the influential American Internet site Weirdworm.com ranked Artūrs Bērziņš sixth in the Top 10 of the world's most original artists. The artist's works are also used as prints on clothing, attracting the attention of the representatives of world's music and alternative fashion industry. Worth to mention the fact that in 2020, pop music diva Billie Eilish arrived at the London NME Awards ceremony wearing T-Shirt with Artūrs Bērziņš artwork print on it. In 2017, printing house Zvaigzne ABC published the artist's debut novel Twists of the Universe, which is the first example of the weird fiction genre in Latvian contemporary literature.

Kristīne Rubene. Solo exhibition "White, Red, Gray"
14.05.2021 -
Cultural center Grata JJ gallery Museum LV Ausekla street - 5
Exhibition is available from May 14, 2021
Safe consumption of art - Kristīne Rubene's solo exhibition “White, Red, Gray” will be opened in windows
The 14 th of May is a first day for the new MuseumLV gallery and Cultural Center Grata JJ exhibition season that starts with the solo show of Kristīne Rubene in show-windows at affiliate on Ausekla Street 5 and will be available 24/7 from the outside for anyone who is interested. It is a way to make art more accessible to the public in the current situation and to enrich the experience of Riga residents and city guests during their stay in the Quiet Center.
This exhibition is a contribution of the gallery’s team for maintaining a positive atmosphere and a gift to all residents in their daily lives and to those who walk in search of beauty, hoping to get a brighter view of the future. The affiliate of the Gallery is located on the first floor of the building and has eight 3m high windows facing Ausekla Street. This street is an active line in the historic Quiet Center, where it connects parks and cultural and historical sites.
The exhibition “White, Red, Gray” is an encouragement to passers-by, the contribution of MuseumLV and Grata JJ to the decoration of the urban environment, as well as another opportunity for the public to get acquainted with the works of contemporary Latvian artists. Special night lighting will provide opportunity to see works of art even in the dark.
The artist herself describes the idea of her exhibition as following:
“WHITE. It all starts with milk. The beginning of life. Without milk, we cannot enter and remain in this world. Milky rivers and jelly coasts.
RED. Eternal strawberry fields. Innocent joy and happiness. Sultry summer and sweet scent.
GRAY. Table. I would like to believe that it is the table that makes us better and smarter people. The table separates us from everything that is wild, fast and hasty. The table takes time. We sit next to it, have a meal, talk, we think and write. The table connects and lifts."
As it is unknown when the restrictions will be reduced and cultural institutions will be opened for their visitors, the MuseumLV and Grata JJ team believes that the exhibition is a great, epidemiologically safe alternative to indoor exhibitions or virtual content. A society that is tired of restrictions deserves art and artists also deserve for the world to see their works.
The exhibition can be viewed from the outside for free

Dita Lūse. Solo exhibition "Amalgams of time". 23.10.2020 – 28.11.2020
24.10. - 28.11.2020
Dita Lūse. Solo exhibition "Amalgams of time".
While working on the artworks for this exhibition I have come to increasingly feel that the time of each and every one of us is personal and unique, and the collective, universal time is just an illusion. The present for each of us consists of reality, our future expectations, and memories of the past that flash across our mind, caused by some impulse. Immersion into the past and our memories, including inherited memories, is sometimes so powerful that they affect us visually more intensely than the visible reality in front of us.
Like the olfactory memory that lets one perceive the smells based on the memories of things experienced and sensed in the past, the visible image sometimes gives a similar impulse – while you look at some visual evidence you are carried away in your thoughts to some different place and time, and you may see a whole different scene or event in your mind and become lost in the labyrinths of thought.
Why are the middle-generation artists currently concerned with reflecting upon themselves and their past? One of the reasons might be that there is a new “phone” generation that has to a large extent lost their connection to the past. Perhaps artists intuitively percieve it and through their work are trying to create a bridge between the times when there was a cult of letters and family photo albums and the current age of instagram. It might be a nostalgia, understanding that this is the reality of our time, yet feeling sad for the bygone and experiencing sentiment for it.
Writing and receiving letters is a form of relationship that is almost entirely lost nowadays, yet it is a long-lasting testimony to relationships, something that contemporary relations can not substantiate in a tangible form. The letters are also an evidence of the time one person devotes to another. It is something we do not do nowadays, we allocate much less time to the other person. Our day-to-day communication is short, fractured, careless, time-saving, which can become a hindrance to the well-being and enjoyment of our relationship.
The central image of the exhibition is the relationships, the evidence that they have left and that still influence the descendants. Perhaps it is essential and beautiful to stop at times and look at the love of two young people, the winding path of life through the evidence they have left – letters, with signs of foxing, photos, that still have an impact on us and show us who we are are and where we come from.
For the inspiration of the exhibition there have been used authentic letters and photographs from the family archives.
The exposition is located on the first floor of the MuseumLV gallery.
The entrance ticket costs 5 Euros, the reduced admission is 2 Euros.

"#artifact#fifthcivilization". Annual international contest GRATA BALVA award 2020. 12.09.2020 – 17.10.2020
12.09. - 17.10.2020
Annual international contest exhibition of MuseumLV gallery and cultural centre Grata JJ “GRATA BALVA” opens its doors to visitors and artists for the third time. Back in the spring, despite all the difficulties of the situation, more than 150 artists received an invitation from the gallery to prepare their works for the contest on theme “#artifact#fifthcivilization”. Professional artists from Latvia, France, Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, Belarus, China and England expressed their wish to take part in the project. Unfortunately, due to the current situation, the works of foreign authors could not arrive, therefore this year more than two hundred works of Latvian artists were supplemented by works of foreign colleagues from the fund of previous exhibitions of GRATA BALVA.
The GRATA prize is actually two prizes from the MuseumLV gallery fund, 500 Euros each. Representatives of the MuseumLV gallery choose their nominee based on the principle of a long-term, fruitful relationship between the gallery and the author and present the GRATA prize at the opening ceremony of the contest exhibition. Friends and colleagues of the Grata JJ cultural center, who have expressed their wish to support any of the participants in the competition, also award their prizes. The fate of the second GRATA prize is determined by the visitors of the exhibition, who can vote for their favorite works or art objects during the entire duration of the exhibition. The “Audience Choice Award” is awarded to the winner after summing up the results at the opening ceremony of the next exhibition at the gallery. In order to preserve the format of a fair vote, all paintings and art objects are presented with numbers without mentioning the names of the authors. Each spectator has the opportunity to award his vote to the work he chooses by indicating the number of the work on his ticket directly in the gallery, or online, by marking a photo of the work on the web page of MuseumLV and Grata JJ in the section “Blog – Grata Balva 2020 – works”. Authors’ works in other techniques and materials will also find their place in the exhibition, and moreover, each participant can exhibit one or two more thematically relevant works in order to enrich the personal context. A complete catalog of works is available at the MuseumLV web page, and all works are available for purchase. The sponsor of the GRATA award is company Grata Eco House, manufacturer of ecological houses. This year all the involved artists have been provided with canvases - either square - 40x40 cm or round – 40 cm in diameter. These are the artworks that will be judged.
“#artifact#fifthcivilization” is the name and theme of the contest exhibition of the 2020. The swift synergy of fundamental and applied sciences gives rise to various theories regarding the origin of the Universe, the formation of the planet Earth, the emergence and development of intelligent life and the possible civilizations that have existed before ours. How can we know if we are the first reflective creatures that live in this remote place – on the Planet Earth, which is situated in the Solar system, in the Orion sleeve of Milky Way galaxy, part of our Local galaxy group within the Virgo cluster, which is part of Laniakea superclaster within the Pisces-Whale supercluster complex, all that being a part of the Perseus-Pegasus Galactic Filament... Will we have the chance to find the answer to this question about our birthright within our lifetime? Or perhaps we are on a threshold of the next stage of our development, where completely different tasks will present themselves? We can not know the history of tomorrow, nor can we know what role we may assume within the next 24 hours. Only today is obvious, and only today we have the possibility to create an artefact to prove our existence in the history of our home and to leave it to our future selves, be it an identification mark, a sign of presence, a vivid stroke or a watercolor image. We define the day we live in and thus we proceed to the day called tomorrow, and claim our right to have another happy day on this planet. According to Marx Wartofsky, “an artefact is for the evolution of culture what a gene is for the biological evolution”.
We are grateful to friends and colleagues of the MuseumLV gallery and Grata JJ cultural center: sporting goods store chain “Sportland” and art supplies stores – Galerija “M6”, “Radošo Darbu Galerija”, “Vilhelms” and “Vilori”, who expressed a desire to support the participants of the competition with their prizes.
The exposition is located on both floors of the MuseumLV gallery.
The entrance ticket costs 5 euros, the reduced admission is 2 euros.

Exhibition "#4stages". 09.07.2020 - 29.08.2020
09.07.2020
The new exhibition “#4stages” by art gallery MuseumLV of Cultural Centre Grata JJ is devoted to the International Baltic Ballet Festival. The festival, that is organized by the extraordinary Latvian ballerina Lita Beiris, celebrates its 25th anniversary under the title “From Classics to Avant-garde” all around Latvia. This year the festival should have taken place from 12 March, 2020. But unfortunately the global quarantine has made its strict temporary adjustments, but as the summer has come, the country’s cultural life is reviving, and the optimism of the GRATA JJ team and love of art served as reliable shield and support during the period of universal self-isolation.
So, by organizing the exhibition, the creative team of the gallery MuseumLV demonstrates its perception of Latvian national ballet history as aesthetical pleasure.
The exposition explores the existence of two interrelated phenomena: the art of ballet, as a tool for creating magical worlds of fairy tales, myths and legends that give humanity the definitions of good and evil, black and white, love and hatred, and on the other hand, the phenomenon of ballet artists devoting their entire lives to this world by virtue of extraordinarily heavy physical, spiritual and emotional work. By means of designing the scenery of the space and using a series of visual exhibits, the “#4Stages” show provides all viewers with opportunity to immerse themselves fully into the backstage of the theater world. Visitors will be able to enjoy the solemn splendor of theatrical costumes and the sophistication of ballet tutus from the “Swan lake” ballet in the “grand hall” of the gallery’s theater, take a glance into impromptu “rehearsal hall”, watch a video of actual training and appreciate the importance of everyday workouts and discover the first of a kind video instruction movie “Classical Ballet Technique”, directed by Yakov Mirimov in 1946, which was created as a teaching tool for all the teachers of the Soviet ballet schools.
The second floor of the gallery is fully dedicated to four ballet theatricals featuring prominent ballerina Lita Beiris - Peter Tchaikovsky's “Sleeping Beauty”, Adolf Adan's “Giselle” and Morris Ravel's “Bolero”. The performance mood here is defined by the paintings of Dita Lūse, Kristīna Keire, Agnija Ģērmane, Ilze Laizāne, Ilze Preisa, Ieva Caruka and many other gallery artists, as well as young artists such as Eduards Dubrovskis, Aivis Pīzelis, Jana Nesteroviča, Ivans Mazeins, Anya Vero, Rita Uljanova and Dace Dēliņa-Lipska, Ieva Baumgarte, who have devoted their works to the theme of the exhibition.
The core of the exhibition is made up of the works of famous Latvian artists Ivars Heinrihsons, Irēna Lūse, Džemma Skulme, Anita Kreituse, Aleksejs Naumovs, Lidija Auza, Uldis Zemzaris, Juris Dimiters, Ieva Muzikante as well as ballet costumes and objects – both contemporary and valuable historical exhibits. The exhibition features props and ballet costumes from the personal collection of Ieva Immertreija, a ballet dancer, costume designer and the head of the Ballet Class Association. Ieva has acquired a wide-range art education in Latvia and abroad and today she participates in the “4stages” exposition as a high-end member offering unique ballet costumes that have been tailor-made according to her sketches.
The MuseumLV art gallery of the cultural center Grata JJ expresses its gratitude to all the artists who contributed to this project: Laine Kainaize, Linda Kozule, Gita Šmite, Eduard Zentsik, Elizabete Melbarzde, Aija Bāliņa, Zoja Geraskina, and to Ieva Immertreija personally for the equipment, costumes and active assistance in organizing the exhibition and the opening ceremony. We thank company “Ziedu Sēta” and Latvian National Opera and Ballet for the provided equipment.
The creative group of MuseumLV gallery expresses sincere gratitude and appreciation to the collectors who provided works of art from their own collections, among them: “The view on opera” by Zenta Logina and “Swedish park” by Maija Nora Tabaka from Zuzāns collection, paintings from Pēteris un Ilze Tērmanis collection and paintings, sketches and costumes from Lita Beiris collection.

Ilze Smildziņa. Solo exhibition "Somewhere right there"
29.02. 2020 – 31.03.2020
Most art lovers associate Ilze Smildziņa’s name with oil paintings of virtuosic clouds, which fill up infinitely vast space.
In her new solo exhibition, Ilze Smildziņa is loyal to her favorite technique and theme. Visitors will be able to view works created in the last two years. While looking at her paintings you get a sense of a moment that has just passed, the reality and the illusion of what is possible and impossible are intertwined. However, the realistic mannerism of the paintings makes one believe that this is a reflection of reality.
When asked about this project the artist says: “The title of the exhibition is related to the fact that I am still very much in the cloud theme. Right there. There are so many clouds, so many feelings I haven’t painted yet.
Somewhere - it is an undefined, nameless place, but still it’s a place we recognize. We've been there. So we continue looking for something and during this important process we fail to notice the simple joys of everyday life. Only when we take a moment to stop, the mind suddenly opens and we realize how much beautiful and noteworthy there are around us… and often we find it where the search began - right there.
Painting allows me to tell a story without using words. My artwork contains fragments of what I have seen and experienced in everyday life, but these scenes have been placed in a different reality, thus highlighting the story itself. The depicted stories can take place elsewhere, but the spaciousness and infinite space allow the viewer to interpret the story as they wish. The sense of space and freedom has a lot of meaning. The people depicted in my paintings are my friends, acquaintances or people I have accidentally met, who are all now brought into the stories I have created. Other times, the storyline changes in the work process and the event is transformed into something completely different. The imaginary world through which I want to actualize a theme or image may be relevant to me or the public at the time. The stories in my paintings have a free space that allows each viewer to create their own scene.
Ilze Smildziņa has a master's degree in painting from the Latvian Academy of Art in a figurative workshop and a master's degree in printmaking. The artist has had several solo exhibitions in Latvia and Lithuania, as well as participated in various local and foreign group exhibitions and art competitions, including ArtParis art exhibition, representing Saatchionline Art Gallery (2011), 6th Beijing International Art Biennale (2015, 2019), Paint One Another Know One Another” exhibition in Beijing (2016), Art Gemini finalist exhibition in London (2017, 2018), as well as art symposiums in France, Belarus, Finland, India and Cyprus. Ilze's artwork is featured in private collections in Canada, Belgium, France, Sweden, Germany, Ireland, the United States, Belarus and Latvia, the National Association of Chinese Artists and the Luciano Benetton Collection.

Aleksejs Naumovs (LV), Vilen Künnapu (EST). Exhibition "Place. Image. Energy"
12.01. 2020 - 22.02.2020

Juris Dimiters. Personālizstāde "Mana laika zīmes"
22.11.2019. – 04.01.2020.
Jura Dimitera jaunajā personālizstādē "Mana laika zīmes" skatītājiem būs iespēja izsekot līdzi leģendārā mākslinieka interešu lokam un viņa daudzpusīgajai radošajai darbībai no 60- to gadu beigām līdz šim brīdim.

Solo exhibition "Love Recital"
12.10. - 13.11.2019
No 12.10 – 13.11. kultūras centra GrataJJ mākslas galerija MuseumLV Juris Jurjāns. Personālizstāde "Mīlestības vēstījums"
Juris Jurjāns piedāvā skatītājiem vēl neredzētus darbus un jau iemīļotas gleznas, kas ekspozīcijā veido jaunu kontekstu. Daudzi no izstādītajiem darbiem pārstāv mākslinieka daiļrades zelta fondu.

25.09.2019. – 26.10.2019.
No 25.09.2019 – 26.10. 2019 Kultūras centra Grata JJ mākslas galerijas MuseumLV, 2. stāvā apskatāms starptautisks multimediāls mākslas projekts “Sāls pieskāriens”.
Mākslinieki no dažādām valstīm, kopā strādājot pie vispārcilvēciskām tēmām, risinot pasaulei aktuālus jautājumus, runājot mākslas valodā - veido milzīgu pozitīvo spēku.
Starptautiskajā izstādē “Sāls pieskāriens” piedalās mākslinieki no Latvijas, Lietuvas, Igaunijas, Krievijas – apvienojot dažādus izteiksmes veidus - fotogrāfiju, glezniecību, grafiku, instalācijas, performances.

Solo exhibition "I Am"
06.09.2019. – 05.10.2019.
On September 6, a solo exhibition ‘I Am’ by the painter Gita Šmite will be opened at the gallery Museum LV.
This time alongside with her latest paintings, some older works will be also displayed, even the ones created during her studies at the Latvian Academy of Art. Altogether the collection will present a sophisticated story of a woman’s life and its values.
It is exciting to realise what has happened in the last 25 years and what changes have taken place. The children once portrayed have grown up. The princess's chair is replaced by a bathhouse bunk; instead of beads and glitches there is a crown of flowers or a mop of gray hair. The beautiful models have dropped their festive dresses and now are just simple women. Moreover, they are not abstract, but truly real – from Kolka, from Riga.
Gita Šmite is a graduate of the stand-painting department of the Latvian Academy of Art under professor Imants Vecozols and the painting masterclass of Vilis Ozols. She has taken part in exhibitions since 1995. Has held more than 12 solo exhibitions and has designed costumes for the theatre performances. She is the author of a unique brand -‘Bathhouse Art’.
At the opening of the exhibition, there will be handing of the audience award prize from the project GRATA BALVA which took place at the gallery during the summer.
The exhibition “I am” at the gallery Museum LV will be on display till October 5.
The entrance to the exhibition is free
