Guided tour and discussion with the artists and curator of the exhibition “AS IF WE HAD NOTHING TO BE AFRAID OF”

Dear colleagues and friends of MuseumLV Gallery,

We are pleased to announce an additional guided tour of the exhibition
“AS IF WE HAD NOTHING TO FEAR”,
led by the project’s authors Zoja Golubeva and Deniss Evins, with the participation of the exhibition’s curator, Deniss Hanovs.

This time, visitors will be able to choose their preferred format — to walk through the exhibition with the artists or join a tour led by the curator, gaining different perspectives on the project and its interpretation. Guests will have the opportunity to explore the exhibition’s concept in greater depth, learn more about the artists’ creative practices, and reflect on fear as one of the defining conditions of contemporary human experience.

About the exhibition

The exhibition explores fear as a fundamental condition of contemporary life — from a barely perceptible inner impulse to anxiety shaped by global instability and personal trauma. Here, fear is viewed not only as a destructive force, but also as a moment of pause — an opportunity to step back and look at oneself from a distance.

In his works, Deniss Evins combines digital technologies, mirrored constructions, and organic forms to create images of vulnerability and solitude. Zoja Golubeva’s paintings, drawing on the Baroque tradition, address themes of inner darkness, despair, and existential anxiety through personal and intimate narratives.

Nature became an unexpected co-author of the project: the organic structures of forest fungi influenced the exhibition’s visual language, linking the imagery with memory, forgotten stories, and the unconscious.

Open to interpretation, the exhibition invites viewers not only to confront the fears of others, but also to listen to their own — posing the question of whether a genuine encounter, with another and with oneself, is truly possible.

"AS IF WE HAD NOTHING TO BE AFRAID OF"

Dear gallery MuseumLV and Grata JJ cultural centre friends and colleagues!

From January 29 to April 4, 2026, the exhibition “AS IF WE HAD NOTHING TO BE AFRAID OF” will be on view at MuseumLV Art Gallery, located in the Grata JJ Cultural Center.

The exhibition explores fear as a fundamental condition of contemporary existence — from a barely perceptible inner impulse to a paralyzing experience shaped by global instability, systems of control, and personal trauma. Here, anxiety is not only a destructive force but also a moment of pause, an opportunity to observe oneself from a distance and to register what is usually hidden or suppressed.

Artists Zoya Golubeva and Denis Evin propose different yet complementary approaches to this “investigation of anxiety.” In Evin’s works, digital technologies, mirrored structures, and organic objects coexist with images of loneliness and vulnerability. Golubeva’s paintings, referencing the Baroque tradition of European art, address themes of inner darkness, despair, and existential anxiety, unfolding through personal and almost intimate narratives.

During the process of creating the exhibition, Nature unexpectedly emerged as a third participant. Organic structures of forest fungi generated imagery that surfaced within the paintings, intertwining with memory, forgotten stories, and the unconscious. Open to the viewers’ interpretations, the exhibition invites audiences not only to encounter the fears of others but also to listen to their own, asking: what becomes visible when anxiety recedes, and is a true encounter — with another and with oneself — possible?

CV

Zoja Golubeva is an interdisciplinary Latvian artist. She earned her artistic education at the Latvian Academy of Art (BA in Painting) and also studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, focusing on painting, textiles and public space art.

Deniss Evins is an interdisciplinary Latvian multimedia artist. His works exist at the intersection of performance, interactive installations, text, video, and digital technologies, where he explores reflections of memory, identity, and vulnerability within the digital environment - creating space for contact with the Other and sincerity.

Premonitions… What should I paint? How should I paint? How should I live? It feels a little unusual, especially now that I am turning 70.

I continue to explore new techniques and new subjects, following my premonitions.

But there is one thing I know for certain:

"Labotam ticēt". Krievu teātris Latvijā 1873. - 1940.

Pateicoties bijušā Mihaila Čehova Rīgas Krievu teātra direktora, Triju Zvaigžņu ordeņa kavaliera un Staņislavska prēmijas laureāta Eduarda Cehovala pētnieciskajam darbam Latvijas arhīvos un daudzu līdz šim sabiedrībai slēptu vēsturisku liecību izpētei, ir uzrakstīta jauna lappuse Latvijas un visas Baltijas trauslajā teātra mākslas vēsturē.

Mīlestība pret patiesību, kas raksturo pētnieku, ir atgriezusi Krievu teātrim Latvijā desmit radošu un meklējumiem bagātu gadu – periodu, kurā 19. gadsimta beigās veidojās jauna teātra valoda.

Vienlaikus materiālu meklējumi kļuva par tiltu starp latviešu un krievu Rīgas vidusšķiras pilsētas elitu kultūrām strauji augošā Eiropas metropolē.

Mākslas galerija Museum LV piedāvā unikālu izstādi “Labotajam ticēt”, kas veltīta gandrīz septiņdesmit gadu ilgajai krievu teātra veidošanās un attīstības vēsturei Latvijā — no pirmajām antreprīzēm līdz 1940. gadam.

Ekspozīcijas pamatā ir plaša pētnieciska darba rezultāti Latvijas arhīvos, kas vainagojās ar sensacionālu atklājumu. Daudzus gadu desmitus par oficiālo Rīgas krievu teātra dibināšanas datumu tika uzskatīts 1883. gada 2. oktobris, kas saistīts ar A. A. Lavrova antreprīzi. Tomēr jaunie arhīvu dokumenti pārliecinoši pierāda, ka pirmais krievu teātris Rīgā sāka darbību jau 1873. gadā, antreprenera N. I. Ivanova vadībā.

Šis atklājums ne tikai precizē vēsturisko hronoloģiju, bet arī kļuva par idejisko pamatu izstādes nosaukumam — “Labotajam ticēt”, kas simbolizē cieņu pret patiesiem faktiem un dzīvo atmiņu par teātra īsto vēsturi.

Šodien var droši teikt: Rīgas Krievu teātris ir vecākais darbojošais krievu teātris Baltijas valstīs.

Ekspozīcija apvieno arhīvu dokumentus, retas afišas, unikālas fotogrāfijas, izrāžu programmas un laikabiedru atmiņas — daudzas no tām pirmo reizi tiek izstādītas plašākai publikai. Apmeklētāji varēs izsekot, kā sarežģītajā un daudznacionālajā Latvijas kultūras vidē veidojās profesionāla teātra tradīcija, kas izgājusi ceļu no pirmajām viesizrādēm un antreprīzēm līdz pastāvīgas skatuves izveidei un valsts atbalstam.

Izstāde “Labotajam ticēt” ir ne tikai vēsturisks stāsts, bet arī mīlestības apliecinājums teātrim kā dzīvajam organismam, kas spēj mainīties, saglabāt atmiņu un iedvesmot jaunas paaudzes.
